Problem

Laptops have gone mobile. The workstation never followed.

Laptops now follow professionals and students from desks to couches, airports, and beds, but ergonomic support has not kept pace. Without proper support, users face poor posture, uncomfortable heat, instability, and blocked ventilation.

Existing solutions fall short: desk stands are heavy, lap desks are bulky, and compact stands often require a hard surface. The challenge is to deliver stable, adjustable, heat-reducing support across both desks and soft surfaces in a thin, lightweight form.

Remote & hybrid professionals

Move daily between home offices, couches, cafés, coworking spaces, and meeting rooms.

Students

Work from dorm rooms, libraries, lounges, beds, and shared study spaces.

Travelers & creators

Work from airports, airplane tray tables, trains, and hotels, and care how their gear looks.

Context

Ideation

Designing for portability, stability, adjustability, and heat together.

Laptop users needed a portable support system that could adapt to different working environments, balancing portability, stability, adjustability, and thermal separation. After exploring rigid stands, sleeve-integrated concepts, and folding structures, the folding panel approach proved strongest because it could transform from a slim folio into a stable, wide-based support.

FR4 fiberglass provided the best combination of rigidity, low weight, thinness, and thermal insulation, while vegan leather improved comfort, protection, and appearance. Three tested angles (20°, 30°, and 35°) support typing, everyday work, video calls, travel, and couch use, with prototypes refined for hinge performance, magnet strength, friction, and stability.

Solution

A fiberglass folio that unfolds into three working angles.

Svelt is a foldable, multi-angle laptop stand made from rigid fiberglass panels and a vegan-leather surface. Its contrasting orange folding element intuitively shows users how to adjust between three working angles.

At just 0.2 inches folded, Svelt packs flat, deploys in seconds, and uses passive airflow to reduce lap-facing heat by up to 18°F. It is designed primarily for 13- and 14-inch laptops, including the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

Solution render
Step 1

Cut & laminate

FR4 fiberglass panels are die cut, then laminated with the flexible hinge layer that defines the fold geometry.

Step 2

Wrap & bond

The vegan leather exterior is adhesive-bonded and edge-wrapped, concealing the structure and setting the premium finish.

Step 3

Assemble & QC

Magnets are inserted and every unit is checked for angle accuracy, fold alignment, rigidity, grip, and edge quality against a golden sample.

Features

Three Adjustable Angles

20° for extended typing and tight spaces, 30° as the everyday balance, 35° for calls and viewing. Adjustability replaces the single ergonomic assumption most stands force on every user.

  • Keyboard and trackpad stay fully accessible
  • Angle selection is legible through form and material cues alone
Three Adjustable Angles

Stable Where Stands Fail

The broad panel base distributes load instead of concentrating it on feet, so Svelt works on beds, couches, cushions, blankets, and laps - the environments that tip or sink every compact folding stand.

  • Triangular geometry resists compression and rearward collapse
  • Pressure spreads across the lap instead of digging in
Stable Where Stands Fail

Passive Thermal Comfort

Physical separation and an air gap beneath the device cut lap-facing heat by up to ~18°F in testing; no fans, batteries, noise, or charging.

  • Keeps blankets and clothing from blocking laptop vents
  • Reduces direct laptop heat on laps for comfortable work sessions

Carried without thinking

At 1.2 lb and 0.2 inches folded, Svelt packs flat underneath the laptop and deploys in seconds. Svelt is easy to use and ready to go at home, in an office, a client meeting, or seat 23F.

  • No loose components to lose or assemble
  • Easy to unfold anywhere

Viability

A premium product in a market of commodity stands.

Svelt targets the growing laptop stand market, valued at $380.26 million in 2023 and projected to reach $672.75 million by 2030. Its differentiation lies in combining soft-surface stability, portability, adjustable angles, and heat separation in one slim product.

At a $50 retail price and approximately $13 landed cost, Svelt supports strong D2C margins, short-form content acquisition, B2B partnerships, and premium editions. The product has already been manufactured, sold through preorders, shipped to customers, and featured by CBS Los Angeles.

Differentiators

  • Only stand engineered for soft surfaces AND daily carry
  • Passive ~18°F thermal separation with zero electronics
  • Premium build that reads as a personal accessory, not equipment
  • Defensibility through integration: thinness, stability, angles, heat, and brand together

Outcome

Prototyped, manufactured, sold, and shipped to customers.

Svelt is a complete product-development case study: observed problem → concept → structural and material engineering → prototyping and thermal testing → DFM and supplier management → brand, e-commerce, and content → preorder sales → manufacturing → fulfillment → national media exposure. CBS Los Angeles featured it in the “Hottest Tech Gadgets | Tech Talk” segment: third-party validation that the product story lands. The brand now has room to grow into a mobile-work ecosystem: the magnetic V2, premium leather editions, and B2B work-from-anywhere kits.
