A bike packing bag and handlebar mount designed as one system - carrying a commuter's work essentials on the bike instead of on their body, and converting to an office-ready bag at the door.

Problem
Bike commuters carry the office on their backs.
Urban professionals who cycle to work inherit the backpack's problems: shoulder strain, a sweaty back, disorganized storage, and a bag that looks wrong in a meeting. Existing options trade one problem for another. Panniers unbalance the bike on one side and sit at the rear where nothing is reachable; baskets hold objects but are not bags you take inside.
Our user interviews sharpened the brief: riders wanted balance, front-of-bike access so items stay grabbable mid-ride, and something that walks into the office without apology.

Ideation
Testing where the bag should live on the bike.
Sketching explored where the bag should live and how it should attach: bags that split across the frame, two-part modular designs, fold-over closures, front-fork mounts, and permanent frame fixtures. Front-of-handlebar won. It keeps weight centered, contents reachable, and the bag visible instead of forgotten.
Both halves went physical early. Cardboard-and-denim bag models tested shape, pockets, and strap placement with real users; cardboard mount mockups tested handlebar fit, then evolved through CAD into a machined aluminum mount.





Solution
A work bag that slides onto a handlebar mount.
Velomute is a structured commuter bag in faux leather and denim, paired with a machined aluminum handlebar mount that carries a folded aluminum sheet panel. The bag has a through sleeve sewn into its back: slide it down over the panel and the bag is docked at the front of the bars, weight centered, zipper facing the rider. At the office, lift it off and it is a briefcase-clean work bag with a padded laptop sleeve; the mount stays on the bike.

Sew
Structured faux-leather shell with denim accents, lined interior, laptop sleeve, and a reinforced through sleeve on the back.
Machine
Aluminum clamp halves grip the handlebar and hold the folded sheet panel that acts as the docking blade.
Slide
The bag's sleeve drops over the panel. Gravity and the sleeve's fit hold it square; lifting it off takes one motion.

Viability
One installed mount can support a family of bags.
Bike commuting keeps growing: a $70.5B global bicycle market, accessories at $12.5B, and commuter culture proven at scale in cities like Amsterdam. The commuter-bag segment splits between cheap utility panniers ($60-100) and premium convertibles ($160-220) that still compromise on access or balance.
Velomute's wedge is the system: a designed bag plus a reusable mount, priced against the premium tier, where the mount also opens an accessories line. One mount, many bags.

Outcome
Bag and mount built and tested together on a real bike.
The semester closed with a working system: a sewn structured bag and a machined two-piece aluminum mount, tested together on a real bike through dock, ride, and release cycles. User feedback shaped every iteration, from pocket placement to splitting the mount for security. Presented as the ACAD 444 final, Fall 2024.
